This is a staple in our house – in fact we have it so often that you think we would have gotten sick of it by now (we haven’t!). It is simple to make, and tastes great. The bacon, onion, and butter all add to the flavour and make this something that we bet you will want time and time again.
Occasionally we add diced chicken and some chili to the recipe to make a quick and easy one-pan meal.
Ingredients:
- 320 g (11.3 oz) of raw cabbage, sliced into thin strips
- 80 g (2.8 oz) of raw onion, diced finely
- 90 g (3.2 oz) of streaky bacon, chopped into small pieces
- 25 g (0.9 oz) of butter
Recipe:
- Melt the butter in a frypan over medium heat.
- Add the bacon and cook until it is just starting to brown (approximately 5 minutes).
- Add the onion and cook until the onion has softened (approximately 3-5 minutes)
- Add the cabbage and cook for a further 5 minutes (until the cabbage has softened but still has a little crunch left in it).
- Season with salt and pepper and serve.

Crunchy cooked cabbage with butter, bacon and onion…nom nom nom.The carbs are a safe amount, and calories are low. This is the very thing ive been looking for as another meal idea, for this low carb/keto way of eating.
Yes, it really is good! We eat it all the time 🙂
I make this quite often with some full fat sour cream mixed in at the end! YYYUUUMMMM!!!!
That sounds really nice, I must give it a try!
Whoa sounds great!
im always looking for ways to cook cabbage! This was very tasty and low in carbs and calories! Chicken pieces and chili powder adds a new taste! Thx so much! God bless!
So pleased you liked it Donna!
this looks sooo yummy….i wonder how it would be with coconut oil instead of the butter?? And if you didn’t want to use bacon, i would use 97% fat free baked ham cut up in small pieces. this would down size on the fat by 26 g….and a lot on the calories as well….just an idea…..either way you can’t lose with this recipe!!!! thank you
I have all of the ingredients. I’m making this tomorrow. Thanks for reminding of this idea. My mom used to make it. It was very good
